Divya Rao was born into a lower-middle-class family, where financial struggles were a part of daily life. Despite this, she showed unwavering determination and became a CA at 21 and went to IIM Ahmedabad to pursue MBA in finance.  “I was very careful with money when I was growing up. I knew my family’s finances were weak, I used to wait for a week to be able to eat a single egg puff. We had no assets, and I knew I had to study to earn money to take care of my parents. I’d studied really hard to become a CA, changing 2-3 buses to get to tuition. I was the first CA in my family,” she said. Determined to further her education, she pursued an MBA in finance from the prestigious IIM Ahmedabad. Divya’s story is a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence and her desire to uplift her family’s financial situation

The Spark of an Idea

During her time at IIM Ahmedabad, Divya was exposed to detailed case studies on global food giants like McDonald’s, KFC, and Starbucks. A professor’s remark about the lack of world-class food chains from India ignited a spark in her.  She said, “One of the professors remarked that Indians weren’t good at running such food chains. This triggered me: it was true that there was no world-class food chain from India. I wanted to introduce traditional South Indian food to the entire globe.” She envisioned introducing traditional South Indian cuisine to the world. However, it wasn’t until she met Raghavendra Rao that this idea began to take shape. 

Meeting Raghav

  1. Raghav’s journey was equally inspiring. With over 15 years of experience in the food industry, he had started from the ground up, working various roles from a roadside vendor to positions in prominent restaurants. Despite his expertise, Raghav faced numerous challenges, including a failed restaurant business. It was during this low point that he met Divya, who provided him with financial advice as a CA. “He had started off with a roadside cart in Seshadripuram. He had no support from his family. He had worked at a lot of restaurants. He’d cut vegetables, he’d done everything. He started a small restaurant business with some other people, but that hadn’t gone well. I met him as a CA and gave him some advice on how to manage the business’s finances,” Divya stated.

The Birth of Rameshwaram Cafe

  1. Despite her successful career as a CA, Divya was drawn to the idea of starting a food business. Together, Divya and Raghav decided to take the plunge, combining their savings to open Rameshwaram Cafe in 2021. Named in tribute to former President APJ Abdul Kalam and reflecting a deep South Indian connection, the cafe aimed to offer authentic and high-quality South Indian cuisine.

Overcoming Challenges

  1. Divya faced significant resistance from her family, who were skeptical about her decision to leave a promising career for a street food business. However, her determination remained unwavering. The duo focused on ensuring their food stood out in terms of quality, which quickly garnered positive reviews. Their hard work paid off, and soon they opened additional outlets.

Personal and Professional Success

  1. As their business flourished, so did their personal relationship. Raghav proposed to Divya, and the two became not just business partners but life partners as well. Their combined vision and dedication propelled Rameshwaram Cafe to new heights.

    Today, Rameshwaram Cafe has four outlets in Bangalore, with plans to expand to Dubai, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The business employs 700 people, processes a whopping 7,500 bills daily, boasts a gross margin of around 70%, and generates an impressive Rs. 4.5 crore in monthly turnover, totaling around Rs. 50 crore annually.

    The Secrets to Their Success

    The meteoric rise of Rameshwaram Cafe can be attributed to several key factors:

    Consistency: The cafe maintains strict regulations on food quality and ingredient selection, ensuring each dish is prepared to perfection. They use pure ghee, avoid baking soda, and eschew artificial colorings and flavorings, resulting in a consistently high-quality menu.

    Freshness: Prioritizing the freshness of its food, the cafe eliminates refrigeration entirely. Ingredients, including batter and chutneys, are prepared in small, fresh batches throughout the day, ensuring every dish bursts with flavor.

  1. Staff Training: With over 700 employees, the team at Rameshwaram Cafe undergoes rigorous training to master food preparation and customer service. 

    Extended Operating Hours: Staying open until 1 AM, the cafe provides a late-night haven for Bangaloreans seeking hot dosas and idlis.

Divya attributes the cafe’s popularity on social media to the genuine feedback and enthusiasm of satisfied customers rather than paid influencers.
