GoCrackIt’s resume review sessions provide hands-on guidance to help students shine. In the first part of our blog, we delve into the art of customising your resume for successful career transitions, drawing valuable insights from our session, in which mentor Jitin Chawla coached a software engineer who is pursuing their MBA from IIM Kozhikode, refining their resume for tech consulting and product management roles.
Mentor Profile
Jitin Chawla is a dynamic professional with an MBA (EPGP) from IIM Bangalore and a B.Tech from Kurukshetra University, bringing 8 years of experience in strategy project management, supply chain management, business process improvement, and digital transformation. Known for his problem-solving mindset, he currently serves as Associate Director at Acko (2023-present), driving strategic initiatives. Previously, Jitin was a Management Consultant at Accenture Strategy (2021-23), and an Area Engineer at Fluor Daniel (2013-20).
A few snippets from the session:
Setting the Stage
Jitin kicked off with a question:
Jitin: Tell me about your background and goals.
Student: I’ve worked one of the Big 4 accounting firms, building dashboards with tools like Angular and SQL. Now, I’m aiming for tech consulting or product management.
Jitin: Great. Let’s tailor your resume to reflect both.
This set the stage for a deep dive into resume evaluation and customisation—a must for anyone wondering, How do I make my resume pop?
Tailoring Your Resume for Different Roles
Jitin suggested creating two versions of the resume. For tech consulting:
Jitin: Focus on technical challenges. Your dashboard project—did you tackle integration issues?
Student: Yes, linking Angular with SQL databases was tricky.
Jitin: Perfect. Highlight that for consulting, it shows problem-solving.
For product management, he shifted gears:
Jitin: Here, emphasise business impact. Did it save time or money?
Student: It cut report generation by 80%, helping clients like Tata Power.
Jitin: That’s the hook—lead with that result.
Jitin zeroed in with a specific example:
Jitin: For consulting, say, ‘Resolved Angular-SQL integration hurdles.’ For product management, ‘Slashed report time by 80%, boosting client efficiency.’
Student: So, I rewrite the same point differently?
Jitin: Exactly. It’s about the audience—techies want process, managers want value.
This hands-on CV review highlighted how customisation matters. Technical roles crave skills and tools; business roles demand outcomes. Tailor your resume to answer each job’s core question. This back-and-forth shows the process in action. Pick a project, then frame it two ways.
Leveraging AI for Resume Writing
Jitin added a tech tip:
Jitin: Try ChatGPT to rephrase technical wins into business cases. But edit it—AI can overpromise.
Student: Like turning ‘built a dashboard’ into ‘improved decision-making’?
Jitin: Yes, but ground it in truth, like your 80% stat.
AI can spark ideas, but you refine them. Even tools that offer resume online review or writing support need your experience to shine through.
Updating Your Resume as You Grow
Finally, Jitin looked ahead:
Jitin: Your MBA courses—like statistics—will matter. Ever used hypothesis testing?
Student: Not yet, but I’m starting it.
Jitin: Add it later. It’s gold for product roles—validating features with data.
Your resume isn’t static. Update it as you grow. When you return to review my resume later, new skills should find their way in.
