Career Consultation Journey with GoCrackIt (Based on a true story)

Navigating the job market can be challenging, especially when transitioning between industries or countries. Akhil Reddy, a recent MBA graduate from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is a prime example of someone striving to find his footing in the professional world. With a diverse background in fintech, operations management, and family business, Akhil has a wealth of experience but faces uncertainties about his next career move.

Our platform, GoCrackIt is designed to provide personalized mentoring and guidance to professionals like Akhil, offering career consultation and meaningful career conversations.  These resources are invaluable in helping individuals make informed decisions and successfully transition to new roles.

During our career conversation session, Akhil expressed keen interest in exploring opportunities in supply chain management within FMCG companies like Unilever. He highlighted his previous roles in operations and project management, underscoring his desire to leverage these skills in a new professional setting.

Here are some excerpts from Akhil Reddy’s career conversation session with one of our best career counsellor, Alok Shrivastava:

Alok Shrivastava: Tell me about yourself, Akhil. What’s your background, and what kind of help are you looking for?

Akhil Reddy: Sure. I come from Kurnool. I recently completed my MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, graduating in December 2023. Before my MBA, I had five years of work experience. I graduated from college in 2017 and started my own fintech startup, which didn’t work out. Later, I joined a startup called Urban.in in Hyderabad as an operations manager. We handled projects like Google Play and Zomato, managing their entire sales process and onboarding restaurants. I worked there for about two to three years. During the pandemic, I joined my family’s gas industry business, managing around 60,000 customers. After that, I pursued my MBA.

Alok Shrivastava: And you did an internship with Plus Group International?

Akhil Reddy: Yes, that was in Hong Kong, focusing on the event space.

Alok Shrivastava: So, what’s your plan now? What are your doubts?

Akhil Reddy: After my MBA, I had high expectations but faced difficulties in Hong Kong due to the language barrier. I’ve been applying for jobs for almost a year without success. Now I’m back in India and looking into supply chain management, but I’m unsure how to proceed.

Alok Shrivastava: Any specific companies or roles you’re targeting?

Akhil Reddy: I’m considering FMCG companies like Unilever but wonder if supply chain management is the right path for me. I also explored business development in Hong Kong but didn’t find it a good fit.

Alok Shrivastava: Have you started applying for these roles?

Akhil Reddy: Not really. I applied to many jobs in Hong Kong but didn’t have much success. I’ve just returned to India and am trying to network and meet people in person in Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Alok Shrivastava: Let’s focus on your approach. Start by targeting companies in e-commerce like Amazon, Flipkart, and others where your operations experience will be valuable. It’s easier to get into these companies and you can leverage your previous work.

Akhil Reddy: Got it.

Alok Shrivastava: You need to network more effectively. Reach out to alumni from CUHK and Amrita University. Personalize your messages, explaining your connection and interest.

Akhil Reddy: Okay.

Alok Shrivastava: Also, search for job openings related to operations, project management, and supply chain. Tailor your resume to highlight relevant experience and skills. Use LinkedIn to find connections in these companies who can refer you.

Akhil Reddy: Understood.

Alok Shrivastava: Consider learning additional skills like Agile, Scrum, supply chain analytics, and tools like Python and Power BI. Understanding ERP systems, especially SAP, will also be beneficial.

Akhil Reddy: What kind of technical skills do they require in supply chain roles?

Alok Shrivastava: You need to be comfortable with data management and visualization tools. Knowing ERP systems can give you an edge. Focus on understanding supply chain planning, logistics, manufacturing, and sustainable supply chain management, which is a hot area right now.

Akhil Reddy: Got it. I’ll focus on these areas and start applying strategically. Thank You.
