If you’re pursuing an MBA, you’ve probably heard this line before—and for good reason. A summer internship is one of the most valuable parts of your B-school journey. It’s your first real chance to transition from classroom theory to corporate reality. More importantly, it could be your ticket to a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO).
Internships are more than résumé builders. They allow you to apply concepts you’ve learned in class to real-world problems, observe how decisions are made in companies, and explore different industries and functions to figure out where you truly belong. You also get to build networks that can support your long-term career.
And let’s not forget the most immediate benefit—a strong performance could lead to a PPO or a PPI (Pre-Placement Interview), reducing your stress during final placements and setting you on a fast-track career path.
The students who walk away with PPOs don’t always work the longest hours—they work smart, stay visible, and create impact. So, what exactly does that look like?
First, take ownership of your project. Make sure you understand the larger business problem you’re solving, not just your specific deliverables. Ask questions, map stakeholders, and align your goals with those of the team or company.
Second, deliver high-impact work. Whether you’re identifying new customer segments, automating internal processes, contributing to strategy documents, or piloting new models, what matters is that your work creates tangible value. Bring in structured thinking, use relevant frameworks, back your arguments with data, and stay curious about the industry and its trends.
Third, communicate your progress clearly and consistently. Share weekly updates with your manager. Ask for feedback. Make sure people know what you’re working on. A well-executed presentation at the end can make or break your internship—so make it crisp, structured, and insightful. Anticipate questions and be prepared to defend your decisions with logic.
Often, the final decision on a PPO isn’t just about what you did—it’s also about how you did it.
Be punctual. Dress appropriately for the corporate setting. Be assertive without being arrogant. Adapt to the company’s communication style—some teams prefer Slack messages over emails, others might like regular face-to-face check-ins.
Take initiative to build relationships—not just within your immediate team, but across the organization. Make an effort to speak with senior leaders when the opportunity arises. Ask thoughtful questions, seek feedback, and show curiosity about the bigger picture.
Also, reach out to alumni and seniors from your B-school who work at the same company. Their insights on expectations, team dynamics, and performance benchmarks can help you navigate your internship more effectively. These conversations often reveal unspoken cultural nuances and success mantras that don’t get shared in formal onboarding.
And above all, be someone people enjoy working with. Positive energy, empathy, and a willingness to learn can sometimes outweigh even technical brilliance.
To grab attention, speak to the “crocodile brain”—the part of our brain that filters information quickly. Your presentation must be sharp, visual, and relevant right from the start.
One intern working on cost analysis for a paper manufacturing firm. During his one to one mentoring session, the mentor suggested that he should use something exciting rather than run-of-the-mill PPT. The intern used Excel sliders to show how changes in input costs impacted final product prices, instead of using a static PPT. This interactive visual made his insights intuitive and memorable.

Avoid bulky text. Structure your story clearly. Use data visuals, not data dumps. When your presentation not only informs but also engages, you leave a lasting impression—and that’s what helps you win a PPO.
A PPO is not just a reward—it’s a validation of your potential. It shows that you’re not only capable of contributing meaningfully but are also someone the team wants to work with again. While not every internship will result in a PPO, every intern has the chance to leave a lasting impression.
