Mastering Guesstimates: It's Not About Accuracy, It's About Thought Process

During a recent GoCrackIt mock interview, a candidate was given a guesstimate:

“How many cricket balls can fit on a cricket pitch?”

The Initial Reaction

  • At first, the candidate hesitated.

“I don’t remember the exact dimensions… I do not know.”

The mentor stopped him right there with an essential lesson:

“You don’t need perfect data, just a structured thought process.”

The Turning Point

  • Once motivated from the verge of giving up, the candidate followed a structured approach:

Make reasonable assumptions – Instead of freezing, he estimated:

    • A cricket pitch is approximately 20 meters long and 3 meters wide.
    • A cricket ball is approximately 7.5 cm in diameter.

Break it down logically – He divided the pitch area by the space a ball would take.

Sanity-check the answer – Rather than rushing, he quickly cross-checked whether his estimate made sense.

The Outcome

  • His first answer? It was off by a factor—but that’s okay!
No one expects a perfect answer in a guesstimate.

But by staying calm and adjusting his logic, he arrived at a reasonable estimate—proving that clarity of thought is more important than instant accuracy.

     Why This Matters

In interviews, it’s not about having the right numbers—it’s about demonstrating how you think.

Next Time You Face a Guesstimate (or Any Ambiguous Problem):

  • 👉 DO NOT GIVE UP
👉 Start with broad assumptions and refine as needed.
👉 Think out loud—let the interviewer see your logic.
👉 Don’t panic if you make a mistake—correct it logically.

Because the best problem solvers aren’t the ones who know all the answers… They’re the ones who know how to find them.
